Tanzania Eco Warriors Initiatives

Tanzania Eco Warriors Initiatives (TEWI) is a community-based non-profit organization established in 2022 in Northern Tanzania. We work with indigenous communities such as the Maasai, Barbaig, and Hadzabe to restore degraded lands, protect ecosystems, and strengthen resilience against climate change.

Nding’a Orkeyaroi, a key member of the Maasai people and founder of TEWI believes that combining conservation with education, empowerment, and cultural preservation, ensures that both people and nature can thrive together.

Animal husbandry has historically been the primary livelihood and cultural foundation of the Maasai, but have had to combine them with other livelihood strategies due to climate and economic conditions. They have not had rain since late April 2025. There are no grasses for the animals and the women spend up to 6 hours to get water.

“We have traditional ways of regenerating the land and managing long dry seasons. But the climate crisis is a real threat to my people, culture and the land.” - Nding’a Orkeyaroi
